Objective
Hot & Cold is an unpublished magazine created by coffee and tea enthusiasts to share their brewing passion and expertise. My job was to develop its brand look and feel, and implement it in a sample issue to be presented to potential collaborators and publishers, with the goal of launching official monthly issues in the future.

Process
I created a soft and friendly wordmark inspired by baristas’ handwriting of names on coffee cups and the cloudy shapes of milk foam. I chose an organic colour palette that feels natural and fitting for the magazine’s cozy, lifestyle-focused tone. I composited together original photography and stock imagery for the cover and contents page to create dynamic compositions that reinforce the hierarchy of the text. Brewing is a highly sensory experience, so I incorporated many visual textures to reflect this.

Each article layout is unique to create interest, though the typography remains consistent and cohesive. A readable and legible serif typeface is used for all body copy, with varying styles of drop-caps, headlines, subheadings, and pull quotes to improve the reading experience and highlight key content.
I also created professional-looking ads, based on industry research, to add realism to the magazine and to show the types of sponsors and advertisements that Hot & Cold could possibly obtain as the brand grows.
